Steel Magnolia House,
Bed & Breakfast,
would have hundreds of
stories to tell!
Built by Italian architects, Trizini and Soldini prior to 1841, original owner Louis Dupleix intended the house to be a store due to its prime location on Cane River. It is said that the house was used as a hospital during the Civil War and may have played a part in the Underground Railroad.
The house was originally located closer to the street, but in the early 1900s it was moved brick by brick to where it now stands, keeping the original design intact. In the 1940s, the home was "modernized" by converting all eight fireplaces to gas as well as adding grillwork, brick posts, a veranda, and family room.
However, the house's real claim to fame is its major role in the critically acclaimed 1989 comedy-drama movie, Steel Magnolias, filmed in and around Natchitoches and starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Julia Roberts, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, and Tom Skerritt.
Today the house boasts 5,900 square feet of living space featuring six bedrooms and baths, original wood floors, a grand staircase, and an 800 square-foot guest house. Live oaks dot the property, accentuated in the spring with multi-colored blooming wisterias, azaleas, camelias, and magnolias. Furnishings include crystal chandeliers, marble fireplace mantels, and many original antiques from its owners throughout the years.
Current owners, Dan and Desiree Dyess invite you to experience a traditional bed and breakfast with true southern hospitality. Steel Magnolia House also provides a charming venue for weddings and social gatherings. Your room awaits!
